Croatia hides some of Central Europe's most dramatic hiking terrain — limestone karst ridges rising 1,700 metres above the Adriatic, canyon gorges carved by turquoise rivers, and national park trails through ancient forest. It's a hiker's destination that most visitors never discover.
Most visitors come to Croatia for the coast. Hikers come for the mountains — and find something genuinely surprising. The Dinaric Alps that run parallel to the Adriatic coast contain ridges, gorges and plateaux that rival anything in the Alps for raw landscape drama, at a fraction of the crowds.
The Biokovo mountain range above Makarska rises to 1,762 metres directly from the Adriatic, creating one of the most dramatic coastal mountain backdrops in Europe. The Biokovo Nature Park trail network offers everything from leisurely walks through Mediterranean scrubland to technical ridge walks with vertiginous Adriatic views. The Makarska Riviera lies directly below.
For canyon hiking, Paklenica National Park near Zadar is outstanding — two dramatic gorges carved through white limestone, with trail grades ranging from flat riverside walks to serious rock-scrambling routes. The canyon walls also make Paklenica one of Croatia's best rock climbing destinations. For day trips, guided hikes depart from Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar to the best trailheads, with all transport included.
