Korčula Day Trip from Split

Korčula's medieval walled old town — rising from a peninsula at the end of a long wooded island — earned it the nickname 'Little Dubrovnik'. It's also the birthplace of Marco Polo, the home of Croatia's finest white wine, and one of the most perfectly preserved medieval towns in the entire Adriatic.

About This Day Trip

The 'Little Dubrovnik' of the Adriatic

Korčula town was built by the Venetians between the 13th and 16th centuries as a fortified trading post and naval base — and the result is one of the most complete examples of Venetian urban planning anywhere in the Adriatic. The town's distinctive herringbone street pattern was designed to manage both the summer Maestral breeze (which blows cooling air along the diagonal streets) and defensive requirements. Walking through it today, 600 years later, feels remarkably intact.

The town is also famous as the claimed birthplace of Marco Polo — born here in 1254 according to local tradition (Venice disputes this vigorously). The Marco Polo House Museum and Tower are among the old town's major sights, and the story gives our licensed Korčula guide an excellent narrative thread connecting the medieval town to the wider world of 13th-century trade and exploration.

In the afternoon, a visit to a local winery for Pošip tasting is the ideal Korčula complement. Pošip is Croatia's most internationally celebrated indigenous white grape — produced exclusively on Korčula and grown nowhere else on earth. The best examples are crisp, mineral-driven and fragrant, with a distinctive freshness that makes them the perfect accompaniment to Dalmatian seafood. Combine the Korčula day trip with an overnight stay for a complete island experience.
