Two hours from Dubrovnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina begins — and within 30 minutes of the border, the Ottoman-era city of Mostar rises from the Neretva River gorge. The Stari Most bridge (rebuilt after the 1993 war) is one of the most emotionally powerful sights in the Balkans.
Mostar is unlike anywhere else in the region. The city was devastated during the 1992–1995 Bosnian War — its 16th-century Ottoman bridge (the Stari Most, meaning 'Old Bridge') destroyed by shelling in 1993. The bridge was rebuilt using original techniques and reopened in 2004, becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of reconciliation. Seeing it in person, knowing its history, is genuinely moving in a way that few tourist sites achieve.
Beyond the bridge, the Stari Grad (Old Town) of Mostar is a remarkably complete Ottoman-era bazaar district — the same basic street pattern as it had in the 16th century, lined with coppersmiths, carpet sellers, jewellers and coffee shops. The smell of roasting Bosnian coffee drifting from the čaršija (bazaar) is the olfactory equivalent of time travel.
Our private Mostar day trip from Dubrovnik includes all border crossings (smooth and quick on our established route), a licensed Mostar guide for the old city walk, lunch at a traditional Bosnian restaurant on the riverbank, and return to Dubrovnik by evening. The drive follows the spectacular Neretva River valley through Bosnia — dramatic canyon scenery throughout. An optional stop at the village of Počitelj — a perfectly preserved Ottoman fortress village — adds another dimension to the journey.
