About This Day Trip

The Bay of Kotor: Europe's Southernmost Fjord

Just 85 km from Dubrovnik, Montenegro begins — and within an hour you're driving alongside one of Europe's most dramatic bodies of water. The Bay of Kotor is a drowned river canyon stretching 28 km inland, ringed by mountains that plunge directly into the sea. The Venetian-era fortified towns along its shores are among the best-preserved medieval urban environments in the Balkans.

Kotor itself is the highlight — its 4.5 km of defensive walls climb the limestone cliff above the town to the fortress of San Giovanni, 260 metres above sea level. Inside, the lanes are medieval in layout and largely pedestrianised, with the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (consecrated 1166) and the Maritime Museum among the key sights.

Perast, a smaller Baroque village 12 km from Kotor, is remarkable for its two offshore islands — Sveti Đorđe (a natural reef with a Benedictine monastery) and Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks), an entirely man-made island built up over centuries, stone by stone, by local sailors.

Kotor old town — 4.5 km of Venetian walls, Cathedral of St Tryphon, St Luke's Square
Perast — Baroque village with view of two offshore island churches
Our Lady of the Rocks — man-made island church built by local sailors since 1452
Budva Riviera — old town walls and beach promenade of Montenegro's coast resort
Bay of Kotor drive — the most scenic coastal road in the western Balkans
