Speedboat from Dubrovnik to Croatia's sunniest island — Hvar old town, the Venetian fortress above the harbour, and swimming in the Pakleni Islands crystal-clear coves.
Hvar receives more sunshine hours per year than anywhere else in Croatia — over 2,700 annually, which is why its lavender fields bloom so vigorously and its stone walls glow such a warm gold in late afternoon. The island stretches 68 km in length, the longest in the Dalmatian archipelago, but it's the old town at the western tip that draws visitors from across Europe.
Hvar town's piazza is the largest in Dalmatia — a Venetian-era square flanked by the Cathedral of St Stephen and the Arsenal building (which contains Croatia's oldest community theatre, still in use today). Above the town, the Španjola fortress looks down from 100 metres — the walls walk takes 20 minutes and the view from the top is among the best in the Adriatic.
The Pakleni Islands, a scattered archipelago immediately south of Hvar town, are reached by water taxi in under 10 minutes. The bays of Marinkovac and Jerolim have clear turquoise water with no development beyond a few beach bars — among the best swimming in the entire Dalmatian coast.
