About This Day Trip

The Cave That Glows Electric Blue

Modra špilja — the Blue Cave — is on the island of Biševo, 5 km west of Vis. At low tide, sunlight enters through an underwater opening 2.5 metres below the surface and refracts upward through the clear water, filling the cave with an intense electric-blue glow. The effect is strongest between 11am and noon on sunny days, which is why timing matters — and why a private speedboat (rather than a group tour) gives you the flexibility to be there at exactly the right time.

Vis island itself is one of Croatia's most authentic — until 1989 it was a closed military zone, so it was never developed for mass tourism. The result is an island that feels genuinely Croatian rather than catering to tourists: excellent wine, local restaurants without picture menus, and a relaxed atmosphere that even Hvar can't match.

Stiniva Cove on Vis's south coast is frequently ranked among Europe's best beaches — a narrow gorge in the cliff that opens to a small pebble cove, with walls rising 40 metres on either side. Accessible only by boat or a steep 30-minute trail.

Modra špilja — electric-blue cave illuminated by underwater sunlight, best at 11am–noon
Vis old town — authentic Dalmatian island, closed to tourism until 1989
Stiniva Cove — one of Europe's most photographed beaches, accessible only by boat
Hvar island — old town piazza, fortress views and Pakleni Islands swim stop
Private speedboat — full flexibility on timing for the best cave light
