Croatia has been at the crossroads of civilisations for 2,000 years — Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian. The result is a cultural landscape of extraordinary depth: Roman palaces still in daily use, medieval walled cities, Venetian campaniles above Dalmatian harbours, and UNESCO sites that deserve far more than a passing glance.
Croatia contains three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the old city of Dubrovnik, Diocletian's Palace complex in Split, and the historic city of Trogir — as well as Plitvice Lakes National Park and several sites of extraordinary historical significance. Our cultural tours go far beyond the audio-guide surface, led by licensed art historians and archaeologists who have spent careers studying these places.
The jewel of any Croatia cultural tour is Diocletian's Palace in Split. Built as a retirement palace for the Roman Emperor Diocletian around 305 AD, it was designed to house 9,000 people and is still lived in today — thousands of Split residents have their apartments, restaurants and shops inside the original Roman walls. Our guided tour reveals the underground cisterns, the mausoleum (now Split's Cathedral), the peristyle where Diocletian held court, and the layers of history from Roman through Byzantine, medieval Croatian and Venetian periods.
In Dubrovnik, the city walls tour combines GoT history with genuine medieval history — 25 metres of fortification built between the 12th and 17th centuries, with guides who explain why every tower, gate and bastion was positioned exactly where it was. Our private cultural tours of Dubrovnik also include the Rector's Palace, Sponza Palace and the Franciscan Monastery pharmacy — the third-oldest working pharmacy in the world.
