There is no better souvenir from Croatia than knowing how to make a proper peka or a perfect black risotto. Our Dalmatian cooking classes combine a market visit with a hands-on session in a local kitchen, guided by chefs who have been cooking these recipes their entire lives.
A Croatian cooking class starts at the market. Before you touch a single ingredient, you walk through the morning produce market with your chef — learning how to choose the freshest fish by its eyes and gills, which local cheese varieties are at their best in which season, and which variety of olive oil (sweet or peppery) suits each dish. This market education alone is worth the class fee.
Back in the kitchen, you work hands-on through 3–4 traditional Dalmatian recipes. The curriculum varies by season and what was looking best at the market, but typically includes: a starter of bruschetta with local olive oil and pršut; a seafood dish (often black risotto with cuttlefish ink, or grilled fish with blitva — Swiss chard cooked with potatoes and garlic); and a slow-cooked peka dish that goes under the bell at the start of class and comes out perfectly at the end.
Every class ends with a shared lunch at the table — eating what you've cooked together, with local wine. It's one of the most sociable and genuinely memorable experiences available in Croatia. Private classes for couples are available and particularly popular as a honeymoon experience. Combine with a morning food tour for a complete culinary day in Dalmatia.
